It’s known as a smart mob, and it’s coming to Tacoma.

People suddenly appear in a major urban public space. They set up tables with gourmet food, china, and cutlery. They eat, with good manners, of course. Then poof! They’re gone.

The event, Le Diner en Blanc comes with rules: Everyone is suggested to dress in elegant white, bring a white tablecloth, and pack a picnic. The point of it? It’s a feast for all the senses.

“First Night Tacoma loves to bring people together to celebrate.” Said one of the participants. “Wright Park is a natural fit for this communal gathering.” We encourage people to come in all white, Tacoma style, as we close summer and welcome fall.

Le Diner en Blanc began in 1988 in Paris; there it has grown to about 15,000 people a year.

“It’s exciting to challenge Tacomans to indulge in something new and different. It’s a city that loves great food and feasts for the senses, and we really want to celebrate the people of Tacoma, our beautiful Wright Park and the downtown core,” said one of the organizers.
“In other cities, they go all out and over the top. A lady in New York puts white feathers on her table and candelabras. Some bring white balloons,” he says, encouraging a white-out. Others don white masks and costumes.

The Le Diner en Blanc website explains the raison d’etre for the event: “[It] recalls the elegance and glamour of court society, and diners engage one another knowing they are taking part in a truly magical event.”

As a community building event and fundraiser, First Night Tacoma will showcase some of the talents that will be seen at this year’s 2015 First Night Tacoma.

Bring your sense of adventure.
